Tanzania: Brazil Keen to Invest in Energy Sector

Posted on : Monday, 8th August 2016

Brazil has expressed interest to invest in the country's energy sector, especially generating bioelectricity and hydropower.

This was said in Dar es Salaam yesterday by the Brazil's Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Carlos Alfonso Puente, during his meeting with the Minister for Energy and Minerals, Professor Sospeter Muhongo.

Ambassador Puente told Prof Muhongo that his country has sufficient knowledge and experience in the production of electricity by using various sources, especially water.

"Tanzania is embarking on an industrial development. This process requires reliable and affordable power supply generated from various sources," he said. In Brazil, he said, there are large companies with long experience reaching 20 to 40 years in the job, producing hydropower within and outside Brazil.

He mentioned another area where his country is willing to invest in the production of electricity using sugarcane residue.

The envoy mentioned bio-energy as good source of clean energy. Prof Muhongo admitted that Brazil has the knowledge, experience and great potential, particularly in the areas of hydropower production and bio energy. "We welcome the new investments from Brazil." He said doors are open for investors, especially in the renewable energy, which is best for protecting the environment.

The minister, however, explained that the Brazilian government has also expressed willingness to work with Tanzania in the construction of crude oil pipeline from Uganda to Tanga in Tanzania.
